Montevideo

We visited this little-known country, Uruguay, and it's capital city, Montevideo, today.  We had arranged a separate shore excursion with a tour guide and a small group of people.  We met everyone right after we got off the ship, and off we went.

This is our guide, Jorge, showing us the national drink of Uruguay, Mate (sp?).  Yeah, I'll follow him around.

Jorge showed us the highlights of Montevideo, including the old town which was a Spanish settlement, of course, and the newer town which depicts their independence from Spain.  This is the only original piece of the old wall around the town built by the Spaniards.  The other side of this is the "new square".

This is the Teatro Solis found in the new square.

The Canadian consulate was also there.  This building is a duplicate of the tower in Dubai...not quite as tall.

We visited markets.  This one had a brewery and this is the Uruguayan flag, and I liked the sign beside it.

We ended on top of a hill with a terrific view of the city and beach.

Our overall impression is that it's a nice clean city, and very laid back.

And here's a little better shot of our ship.

We're in Punte del Este today.  By the time we get back, I might have time to publish the blog before we leave.  If not, you probably won't see anything until a couple of days from now as we'll be at sea until Tuesday at 7 am.
